Most of your kiddos should at least be familiar with it. Last time it was a program song, this is how I introduced it & it worked really well. This activity works well for reviewing the song also.

Place a picture of Christ being baptized on the chalkboard/bulletin board at the front of the room. Dress up like a news reporter...I wore a trench coat, a sticker on my chest that said "Primary Singing Time News", and carried a microphone and/or notebook & pencil. You could also have someone else with a video camera follow you around.

Enter the room and introduce yourself...for example, "This is Sister Lewis with Primary Singing Time News". Next ask the children "who", "what", "where", "when", "why", and "how" questions in the order of the song and take notes of their answers. For example, for the first line of the song, point to Jesus and John the Baptist and ask, "Who are these people?" Then ask another child "where are they?" (in Judea). "When is this happening?" (Long ago). Then play their answers back... "Okay, let me make sure I have this straight. "Jesus came to John the Baptist in Judea long ago. Is that right?" Have the children sing the portion of the song you've just asked questions about. Proceed in the same fashion with the rest of the song.

As I ask questions and get the children's answers, it works well to place pictures/visuals that correspond to each portion of the song on the board. Then as I play their answers back and as they sing, I point to each picture.

Have fun with this one! The kids love it.
I thought it could easily be adapted for singing time.
Teaching hymns can be tricky. They often contain difficult vocabulary & concepts. It's important to really break down the lyrics for the children to be sure they understand what they're singing about.

I recently held a training for the choristers in our stake at our Primary Leadership Training. I assigned each of the choristers a song from this year's outline & asked them to share how they would teach it. Below are Sister Grant's thoughts on "I Stand All Amazed".

These need to be slightly adapted depending on the age of the children.

1. This song is about the atonement of Jesus Christ. When we say "atonement," we are talking about Jesus' suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross.

2. How many of you have ever broken an arm or leg, or hurt yourself in some way? (Most children will raise their hands, and a few will want to share their experiences, so it's important to keep things reined in at this point :) ).

3. When we sin, our spirit gets hurt, kind of like getting a broken arm or leg. But we can't make our spirit all better by ourselves. We need Jesus' help.

4. In the Garden and on the cross, in some way we don't completely understand, Jesus was able to take our sins and suffering upon himself. This means that when we repent (i.e., recognize our wrong, apologize, promise never to do it again), Jesus can take the hurt out of us and into himself, and he overcomes it--he makes it better. This is an amazing gift that Jesus has given us!

5. "I Stand All Amazed" is a song about being grateful for Jesus' atonement. There are some grown-up words that we can learn about so we understand this song better. (Each music leader could pick the words to focus on. Possibilities include amazed, confused, grace, proffers, and/or crucified.)

On another topic, a friend asked how to explain to children the scripture about the earth being "utterly wasted" if temple work isn't done (see D&C 138:47-48, also D&C 2). Here is the explanation I gave him. It occurred to me that this might be helpful for the month when we're teaching a family history song.

Before we came to earth, we lived with our Heavenly Father. While we were there, we made promises to help our family members. Some of our family members came to earth before us, when the gospel wasn't on the earth. It was very brave of them and they had many challenges because they didn't have the gospel.

We promised these family members that when we came to earth, we would help them get the blessings of the gospel. We would find out who they were, and we would go to the temple to be baptized for them and receive other gospel ordinances so they could be together forever as families.

Now we're on the earth. Do we remember our life with Heavenly Father? That's right, we don't. So how can we remember those promises we made to our family members before us? Well, Heavenly Father said in this scripture that he would put those promises in our hearts. So even if we don't remember them with our heads, we will feel them in our hearts. We will want to help our ancestors by going to the temple for them so they can have all the blessings of the gospel, and be together forever as families.

Did you know that when we do temple work for our family members who have died, we also make our own families stronger? Doing temple work for our families is so important! In fact, in this scripture, the Lord says that if we don't do it, the earth will be in really bad trouble by the time he comes back. (That would probably be enough for Junior Primary; for Senior Primary, we could talk more about the problems we see around us in the world because of the war on families.)

The song for this month is "A Child's Prayer". Most of your primary children should be familiar with this song...you may just need to review it. The Friend magazine provides an activity that lends itself well to this week's theme. See here.

Assign a song for practice to each person who prayed (be sure to have "A Child's Prayer" as one of the songs). The Friend only provides 4 people so I will be adding a few additional ones. Place cards with these people & the scripture reference in a container to draw from. Place large visuals of the "why he/she prayed" and "what happened" cards on the chalkboard. I will be printing mine out on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper. Be sure to mix them up! Choose a child to pick a card & read it out loud...the person and the scripture reference. Have the rest of the children match the "who" and "what" that go with the person. Sing a song for practice.

*I am going to add the following scriptural figures:
Alma - Prayed for help in teaching the Zoramites. Asked Heavenly Father to comfort him and his companions and give them strength in their missionary work. See chapter 31.
Ammon - See Alma 27:4-5, 10-12
King Mosiah - See Mosiah 28:6-7
The Primary Children - See Moroni 10:3-5Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00202726929410751810noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1117996265179474180.post-69694561142698484202013-07-11T07:46:00.000-07:002013-07-11T07:46:05.820-07:00Pioneer Day

I was beyond thrilled when I received the topic, "Primary Singing Time Fun". I had never been to Women's Conference before so I wasn't sure what to expect...talk about a wonderful experience! It was so great to chat with all of the amazing women who strolled through my booth. I met many choristers and was able to share my ideas with them as well as hear some of theirs. One thing that remained consistent with every chorister was the LOVE they all had for their calling. It truly is the best calling in the church. We are so blessed to teach these sweet children about the gospel through music each week & to learn from their testimonies.

You can view my virtual sharing station & handouts here. I shared ideas for the following topics:
Wiggle Songs
Program Review Activities
New Children
Birthdays
Singing Motivators
How to Teach a Song
You will need 6-8 plastic leaping frogs...I bought mine at the dollar store but I have also seen larger ones at JoAnn's. Number each frog. Place a start line with tape on the floor. Begin by asking the children what gift we are given when we are baptized. Ask the children what the Holy Ghost helps us do. Call 2 children up at a time and have them each share a way that they can live worthily. Next, have them each pick a frog and place them on the start line. As you say, "On your mark, get set, GO" the children press down on their frogs to make them leap. Whatever frog leaps the farthest is the song that you sing.

Close by bearing your testimony of the gift of the Holy Ghost. Explain to the children that if they live worthily, the Holy Ghost will help them make correct choices.

Other songs for practice this week could include: "The Holy Ghost" p. 105, "Listen, Listen" p. 107, "The Still Small Voice" p. 106.

Listen to the Still Small Voice - The Friend magazine this month (June 2013) has a darling activity that teaches how the Holy Ghost helps us choose the right. It can be found here.

Place the pictures in a bag and the words on the table. Choose a child to select a picture from the bag and find the words that match the picture. After a match is made, sing a song.

*This could also be done as classic memory. Tape the pictures and the words to the chalkboard with the backs facing out, creating a memory game. Have a child try to make a match. When a match is made, sing a song.
Sorry for my lack of posting. Life in the month of May was a little crazy around here...I am sure many of you can relate! But now summer is upon us & I welcome the slower pace that accompanies it. I am sure most of you have already made a visual for "When I Am Baptized", but I thought I would still share mine.
A PDF for a piggy bank is provided but if you do not want to make it, you can always use a real one. Assign songs for practice to 9 quarters. Invite a child to drop a quarter into the bank & then sing the corresponding song. Keep the tenth quarter out so you can talk about giving the Lord one tenth (put in a tithing envelope). Bear your testimony of the blessings that are received from paying a full tithe. Have fun!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00202726929410751810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1117996265179474180.post-83080080868553411112013-05-11T18:27:00.002-07:002013-05-11T18:38:53.354-07:00Build-a-Mother<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

"Eggs"-entration
Make or print clipart images of non-matching Easter eggs. You will need at least 12-16 (for a total of 6-8 matches). Write numbers, song titles, lines from songs ("Whenever I hear the song of a bird" on one & "or look at the blue, blue sky" on the other), or keywords for songs on the back of each egg. Pictures representing the topic/keyword of the songs would also work. Lay them out on the table or tape them to the chalkboard. Have a child try to make a match. Whenever a match is made, sing the corresponding song.

Easter "Do As I'm Doing"
I purchased these masks & ears from the Target dollar section, but I have seen similar items at Michael's. Make Easter action cards that say, "Hop like a bunny", "Peck like a chick", "Roll like an egg", "Gambol like a lamb", etc. Simply have a child draw a card & lead the rest of the children in "Do As I'm Doing" Easter style! Have him or her wear the mask or ears that corresponds to the card chosen.

Easter Egg Hunt
Place song titles in plastic Easter eggs & hide them around the room. Choose a child to find an egg. Sing the song inside.
See the post here.

Another idea is to put the following scriptures in plastic Easter eggs. Each scripture contains a message that Christ taught. Have a child pick an egg and read the scripture. Have the child identify what the Savior taught us & discuss it with the group. Sing the corresponding song.

Opening song - Tell Me the Stories of Jesus p. 57

John 13:34-35 - Love One Another p. 136
Mark 16:15 - The Church of Jesus Christ p. 77
3 Nephi 11:37 - Baptism p. 100
3 Nephi 18:19 - A Child's Prayer p. 12
Matthew 5: 16 - Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam p. 60
John 15: 10-12 - I Feel My Savior's Love p. 74
John 13:15 - I'm Trying to Be like Jesus p. 78
Matthew 5:14-16 - I Am like a Star p. 163
John 13:17 - Choose the Right Way p. 160
Matthew 5:43-46 - Jesus Said Love Everyone p. 61

Bear your testimony of the Savior, His life, and the Atonement. Testify that Jesus provided us with a perfect example to follow. He then gave His life so we could all be saved from sin. He is truly our Savior. Close by singing "He Sent His Son" (p. 57).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00202726929410751810noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1117996265179474180.post-57439284928902646342013-03-14T09:53:00.000-07:002013-03-14T09:55:02.960-07:00Jesus Christ is Our Savior - Week 3This is a continuation from last week's activity. Again, you may intersperse this activity with teaching "If the Savior Stood Beside Me" or other song practice. You will need the following numbered eggs with objects placed inside them:

Egg 10 - Piece of white cloth & Egg 11 - Spices

One of Jesus' disciples asked Pilate if he could care for Jesus' body after He died. Pilate agreed to let him do this. Mary & Mary Magdalene wrapped Jesus' body in linen & used spices to preserve His body. They would return to do this again in a few days.

Egg 12 - Rock

A large rock was rolled in front of the tomb. The Pharisees asked Pilate to place a guard in front of the tomb...Jesus had told them that He would rise on the third day. They were afraid that the disciples might come & take the body to make it look like Jesus had risen.

Egg 13 - Empty egg

An angel of the Lord descended from heaven & rolled back the stone from the tomb. When Mary & Mary Magdalene returned, they entered the tomb & saw an angel of the Lord who told them, "Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified; He is risen; He is not here." Mary Magdalene ran to tell Jesus' disciples. They ran to the tomb & saw that it was empty.

Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene while she was in the garden mourning. She turned & saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize Him. She thought He was the gardener or caretaker. Jesus called Mary by her name...she realized it was the Savior & cried, "Rabboni" (Master). Jesus asked Mary not to touch Him because He had not yet ascended to His Father in Heaven. He told her to go to the apostles & tell them what she had seen.

Bear testimony of your love for the Savior, the resurrection, & the blessings we receive from it.
Jesus Has RisenAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00202726929410751810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1117996265179474180.post-21353387856181225272013-03-03T17:35:00.002-08:002013-03-03T19:34:17.052-08:00St. Patrick's Day IdeasSt. Patrick's Day is actually on Sunday this year!!! Here are some fun & simple ideas to incorporate the holiday into singing time.

Leprechaun Hats
I found these mini hats at Harmon's grocery store but I have also seen them at various craft stores (JoAnn's & Michael's). Simply create a memory game by numbering the insides of the hats. Pictures representing the keywords of the songs you'd like to sing also work. Place the hats in rows on the table. Invite a child to try & find a match. When a match is made, sing the corresponding song.

St. Patty's Day Rainbow
Create a rainbow on the chalkboard using various colors of crate paper. Assign a song to each color of the rainbow. Have a child come up & choose one of the colors off the rainbow. Sing the corresponding song. Since there's always a "pot of gold" at the end of a rainbow, provide each child with a gold treat at the end of singing time. Harmon's & Orson Gygi sell gold chocolate coins but they are kind of pricey. I have used Rolos in the past. A fun size bag of Skittles would also be cute (the colors of the rainbow). Whatever the treat, place it in a black pot (I found a plastic one at Target).

Magic Shoes
I originally found this idea on Sugardoodle & it was a total hit. Find or make a pair of green shoes. Talk to a member of your primary presidency beforehand about wearing the shoes (Disclaimer: it will require dancing). Explain to the children that a Leprechaun has left a pair of magic dancing shoes. These shoes cause whoever wears them to dance. The better the children sing, the better the shoes work. Instruct the person wearing the shoes to start off dancing slowly...maybe just tapping their feet. As the children sing well, have the helper start to dance more quickly. When I did this, many of the children wanted to try wearing the shoes (especially the oldest boys). Use your discretion...this can be a lot of fun but has the potential to get rowdy!

Shamrocks
I found my shamrocks at JoAnn's. A clipart image will also work. Number the back of the shamrocks & assign a song to each one. Tape the shamrocks underneath the chairs throughout the room. At the beginning of singing time, have the children check underneath their chairs. Have the "lucky" children with shamrocks come up one at a time to lead the song. Sing the corresponding song.

Leprechaun Leader
I found all of these items at JoAnn's last year. Simply have a child wear the leprechaun mask or green glasses & lead the group using the "lucky" wand.

*A fun way to determine who gets to participate during all of these games is to place shamrocks underneath the children's chairs. At the beginning of singing time, have the children check to see how "lucky" they are...those with shamrocks get to be the helpers during the chosen activity.
I have done the following activity several times & it ALWAYS invites the spirit. I am sure many of you have seen this before, but I feel that the best way to teach is often through repetition.

This activity will be spread over two weeks...the first week focuses on the Atonement & Crucifixion while the second week focuses on the Resurrection. You will need numbered plastic eggs with the following objects placed inside them:

Egg 1 - Sacrament cup

Jesus introduces the sacrament at the Passover dinner. This is known as the Last Supper because it was Jesus' last supper before he was crucified. Jesus told his disciples what would happen that night & that one of them would betray Him.

Egg 2 - White cloth with drops of blood on it (use red food coloring)

Jesus led his disciples to a garden of olive trees called Gethsemane. He asked Peter, James, & John to wait for Him nearby while He went to pray. While Jesus prayed, He "atoned" for our sins...He bled from every pour of His body because He was suffering for the sins of all people.

Egg 3 - 3 dimes & Egg 4 - Chocolate kiss

After Jesus finished praying, Judas came with a group of men carrying clubs & swords. The Pharisees (Jewish leaders) paid Judas 30 pieces of silver to take them to Jesus. Judas showed them who Jesus was by kissing Him on the cheek. The men took Jesus & led him to the high priest. The high priest questioned Jesus. They hit Him & spit on Him.

Egg 5 - Piece of yarn & Egg 6 - Piece of soap

The next morning, the soldiers tied Jesus' hands & took him to the governor (Pontias Pilate). Pilate asked Jesus many questions & did not think Jesus had done anything wrong. The Pharisees told Pilate that Jesus should die. Pilate did not want any trouble withe the Pharisees so he told his soldiers to crucify Jesus. He washed his hands before the multitude saying that he found no fault with Jesus & that crucifying Him was their choice.

Egg 7 - Thorns & Egg 8 - Piece of red cloth

Pilate's soldiers stripped Jesus & beat Him with whips. They put a red robe on Him & placed a crown of thorns upon His head. They mocked Him by saying "Hail, King of the Jews". They spit upon Him.

Egg 9 - Nail

Jesus was taken to a hill (Calvary) near Jerusalem to be crucified. They nailed Him to a cross. They put nails in His feet, hands, & wrists. Jesus prayed, asking Heavenly Father to forgive the soldiers who crucified Him because they did not understand that He was the Savior.

Egg 10 - Small rocks

About 3 hours after Jesus was nailed to the cross, the sky became very dark. The darkness lasted about 3 hours. Jesus' suffering was so great that it was almost more than He could stand. He cried out, "My God, my God, why has Thou forsaken me?" Jesus then said, "I thirst". Someone dipped a sponge in vinegar, placed it on a stick, & put it up to Jesus' mouth. In a loud voice, Jesus said, "It is finished. Father into Thy hands, I commend my spirit." Jesus bowed His head & His spirit left His body. He had accomplished what He came to earth to do...He had completed it on His own. The earth immediately began to shake.

Invite a child (or two children on those with two eggs) to come up & open an egg. Discuss the objects & then sing a song of your choice. You can focus on teaching "If the Savior Stood Beside Me" or you can practice additional songs about the Savior as well. Close by bearing testimony of the Savior's atonement & His love for each of us.

Other songs for practice might include:
I Lived in HeavenAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00202726929410751810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1117996265179474180.post-60185892758253756332013-03-03T08:33:00.002-08:002013-03-03T10:45:49.844-08:00Jesus Christ is Our Savior-Week1Another month, another song! I am so excited that "If the Savior Stood Beside Me" has been included in the program this year.

I actually really like the ideas presented in the sharing time outline. Just be sure to coordinate with your primary presidency member to ensure that you don't do the exact same thing as they're doing for sharing time.

1. Use the "Do as I'm Doing Discs" found here or here. Invite a child to select a disc & then lead the group with the action he/she chose. Repeat the activity several times, each time inviting a different child to choose a disc. Explain that when we follow the actions of someone else, we are following his or her example. Present a picture of the Savior & explain that He provided us with a perfect example to follow. Begin teaching "If the Savior Stood Beside Me".

2. Select pictures of the Savior during his time on earth. Pictures should be those that illustrate His example to us (i.e., Christ being baptized, Christ praying, Christ teaching in the temple as a Child, Christ washing the feet of the disciples, Christ with the children, Christ performing miracles, etc). All of these pictures can be found in the LDS gospel library. Place the pictures on the board or in a sack/container the children can draw from. Invite a child to select a picture & then discuss what Christ is teaching us in the picture. Intersperse this activity with teaching of "If the Savior Stood Beside Me". Another variation of this activity can be found here.

Close by bearing testimony of the Savior's life & the example he provided for each of us.

Additional songs for practice that correspond with this week's topic include:

Here is a DARLING idea for week 3 posted on the "Primary Singing Time Ideas for Leaders" blog. It incorporates the song "Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes". Here is the link to the post.

Hot Heart
Play "hot potato" with a heart to determine who comes up. I found mine in the Target dollar section.

The Loving Tree
Make conversation heart ornaments out of construction paper & hang them on a tree (I use a small tree I have for Christmas). Each conversation heart has a key word for a song on it. Have the child choose a heart & guess which song it is. Possible saying/song combinations are:

4 Ever: Families Can be Together Forever
U-R-A Star: I am Like a Star
SHHHHH: The Chapel Doors
Be True: Stand for the Right
Shine: Jesus Wants me for a Sunbeam
Marry Me: I Love to See the Temple
Teach Me: Teach me to Walk in the Light
I Love You: Love One Another, Jesus Said Love Everyone
I Hope: I Hope They Call me on a Mission
#1: Latter Day Prophets
I Will Follow: I Will Follow God's Plan
Be Wise: The Wise Man & the Foolish Man
Be Safe: Any song about the Holy Ghost
Call Me: Any song about prayer
Special: I Am a Child of God
I'll Try: I'm Trying to be Like Jesus
Be Happy: Choose the Right Way, If You're Happy
Be Kind: Kindness Begins with Me
Believe: The Church of Jesus Christ, I Know my Father Lives

The possibilities are endless. Have fun!

Box of Chocolates
Who doesn't love chocolate??? This activity is super fun & always a hit. Just be sure to have a candy alternative for those kiddos who are allergic to chocolate &/or nuts.

Buy a box of chocolates & write numbers on the container underneath the chocolates. Assign a song to each number. Have a child come up & pick a piece of chocolate. Sing the song that corresponds.

Valentine's Mailbox
I found my mailbox in the Valentine's section at Target but I've also seen them at Michael's. Make valentine's cards & write songs for practice on them. Have a child come up & take a valentine out of the mailbox. Sing the song. Super simple!

It is my favorite primary song.

Here is an idea for week 1, Jesus Christ created the earth under the direction of Heavenly Father, adapted from I Heart Primary Music. You can see the original post here.

Tape small pictures from the song onto a globe. Keywords from the song could also be used. For example, a bird, blue sky, rain, wind, rose, lilac bush/tree, earth, child. Spin the globe & have a child stop it with their finger. Pick the picture/word that it lands closest to. Take the pictures off the globe as they are chosen & discuss how Heavenly Father placed these things on the earth to make it beautiful. Tape the pictures to the chalkboard in order as they are chosen (Have larger pictures to put up). As the pictures are placed in the correct order, practice the song.

Determine who participates by playing "hot potato" with an inflatable globe. When the music stops, whoever is holding the globe shares a way that they know Heavenly Father loves them & then comes up to stop the globe.

*If you don't have a globe, tape a picture of a the earth to a sack/container. Put all of the keywords/pictures inside & have the children draw from it instead. If you don't have an inflatable globe for "hot potato", simply use a picture of the earth.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00202726929410751810noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1117996265179474180.post-27261369141269759682013-01-26T09:22:00.001-08:002013-01-26T09:50:54.319-08:00AgencyHello! Sorry for the delay in my post this week. We have been sick sick sick at our house. Anyhow, here are a couple ideas for week 4: I have agency, & I am responsible for my choices.

1. Find stories/personal experiences reflecting agency. Kathleen, writer of The Children Sing blog, suggested using those provided in the Friend Magazine's "I'm Trying to be like Jesus" feature. See here. Type up the stories you chose & mount them to the back of a CTR shield. Place them in a container for the children to choose from. Have a child select a shield & read it. The rest of the children listen to see how the child in the story chose the right or could have chosen the right. Sing a primary song that corresponds with the topic.
2. Place two sacks/containers numbered Choice 1 & Choice 2 on the table. Print off several CTR shields. Write songs &/or activities on the back of them. Divide the shields & place them randomly into the two containers. Explain that we have all been given the gift of agency. We make choices everyday...some of them may be right & some may be wrong. We have to be responsible for our choices & accept the consequences. Invite a child to come up & make a "choice". Sing the song &/or complete the activity chosen. Examples of activities are as follows:

-Have the child lead the group in "Do As I'm Doing" using the zoo hats. See here.
-Have the child lead the group in a song using the "Sing-like-a-?" discs. See here.
-Play the hot/cold game (singing loud/soft) while singing a practice song.
-Have the child lead the song using visuals that say loud/quiet, hum, fast/slow, etc.
-Have the child select "who" sings the song by drawing from cards that say things like girls only, boys only, teachers only, children with blue eyes, children with blonde hair, children wearing black, etc.
-Have the child pick their favorite primary song to sing.
-Simply sing a song that you want to practice.
